Maternity and Newborn Photos

Why you should book your Maternity and Newborn sessions together:

You’ve pictured this moment forever – the cute little baby bump, the glowing skin, the wanton ability to eat any random combination of food you want; all of which lead you to the even more special moments – cuddling with your newborn, watching how your pet interacts with them, or just simply staring at them in their cute little outfits. By booking your Maternity and Newborn sessions together, you’ll be able to have all of these moments documented, for you and your family to remember forever without the scheduling stress.

Maternity photo sessions can be booked at any timeline you may find yourself on; whether that be the minute you find out you are pregnant or around your 6-month mark, which is when I ideally suggest booking. At the latest, you want to schedule maternity sessions around 4 to 6 weeks before your due date. This timeline allows for your belly to really pop so you get photos of your nice round belly, it also allows for reschedules in case the weather isn’t looking too great on the day of your scheduled shoot. For Maternity sessions, I allow up to two different locations; Many of my clients like to start at home and finish up at a nearby outdoor location for the best of both worlds. For your second location, I recommend choosing a place that has significance to you. Though, I also have a running list of locations to choose from if you need some inspiration. Starting off at home is great because we get the opportunity to have a before and after comparison, where you are in the nursery with your belly and then later on with your newborn in their own room. By getting some photos in the nursery, it will also help me fully prepare for your newborn session, as I will have a chance to the best time to schedule it in order to have an optimal lighting situation.

Your maternity session is also a great opportunity for us to get to know each other. During that time I’ll have the chance to get to know you a little better and get a better understanding of your unique family story. Besides your wedding photos, your maternity and newborn photos are the first real creation of your personal family archive and I would love to capture you authentically. If you have older children that will be joining us during your maternity session, getting to know them before the new baby arrives can make the newborn photos go a lot smoother and even less stressful. It won’t feel as though a stranger is in your home, it will feel more like I’m a friend. They may feel more comfortable around me since we have previously met during your maternity session, which could lead to better corporation during the newborn shoot.

When booking your newborn session, I will have your due date marked down in my calendar, so when the baby comes you can just let me know and we’ll schedule an official session date 2 to 3 weeks following their arrival. I only book five newborn sessions a month in order to accommodate everyone’s due dates and schedules. We aim to have the newborn session so early in their life because babies change and grow so quickly, as well as it is a bit harder to keep the baby sleepy after this timespan. Though, it is perfectly okay to wait a little longer after their birth to have the newborn session if needed. I’ve had some families who like to wait a bit longer in order to either have time to adjust to parenthood, complete the nursery, or even give their eldest child or children time to adjust to a new baby in the house.

Booking your maternity and newborn sessions at the same time will prove to be beneficial as your baby gets closer to entering the world. Things get hectic in the last few weeks leading up to your due date, and the same goes for after the baby is born. When you book the two shoots together, you’ll have the peace of mind of knowing that you are fully booked and that it is one less thing for you to worry about. It also allows me to guarantee your spot on my calendar, as my five newborn slots per month fill up relatively quickly; I want to make sure you get the photo experience you desire with me.
